Rear Door Cooler for Varistar Server Cabinets

Schroff Cooling Technology

Pentair makes use of its years of experience in the application of integrated air/water heat exchangers to improve and further develop products in the area of electronics cooling. The existing air/water heat exchanger series for cabinet and cabinet row cooling has been expanded with the new, retrofittable rear door cooler with a cooling capacity of up to 30 kW.

However, as servers have become increasingly more powerful and individual cabinet packaging density continues to rise, the requirement for more cooling increases. The correct ambient temperatures are essential for smooth operation of the electronics. Approximately 55 percent of failures in a data center can be attributed to excessive temperatures resulting from insufficient cooling solutions. However, excessive temperatures are frequently isolated to certain height units in the cabinet only and usually not the entire data center. Air/water heat exchangers positioned near the electronics have now become a preferred method of cooling for data centers. They can be used to respond quickly to increasing temperatures generated by the higher packaging densities of the electronics.

The new, passive and low-maintenance Schroff air/water heat exchanger from Pentair can be retrofitted and located on the rear side of the cabinet. The warm air is moved by the equipment fans installed in the cabinet (e.g. server), then pushed by the air/water heat exchanger coil and cooled via water circulation. The cooled air flows back into the room. A temperature-controlled valve is used to regulate the flow rate of the water, enabling the cooling capacity to be adjusted. This allows the heat to be discharged completely without affecting the room temperature. Thanks to its large surface area, this passive system achieves cooling capacities of up to 30 KW.

The heat exchanger is installed inside the perforated door and mounted to a 200 mm-deep mounting frame, which is fastened on the rear side of the cabinet. This makes retrofitting easy. Additionally, the entire cabinet volume is available for the equipment, including cabling and current distribution equipment. The condensate wall/drain and the necessary water connections are also integrated in the mounting frame. The size of the mounting frame is aligned to the standard dimensions of the available server cabinets. Since the Schroff cooling system does not require an additional fan or complex control electronics, overall noise levels are not increased and system maintenance is minimized.
