\nsuch as mounting the heaviest
\nequipment at the bottom of the cabinet,
\nbut it may not correspond to the layout
\nfor the final application.
\nWorking with heavy loads can also
\npresent other issues. Depending on the
\napplication, some cabinet designs may
\nrequire dynamic protection, which in
\nturn, necessitates a more robust design
\ndepending on the load.
\nFOUR \u2013 Thermal Management<\/strong>
\nand Cooling<\/strong>
\nThermal management is an important
\ndesign consideration for any electrical or
\nelectronics enclosure. Thermal overload

\nThere are two main dynamic
\nrequirements \u2013 seismic and shock\/
\nvibration (S\/V) tests. It is worth
\npointing out that S\/V and seismic tests
\nare very different and have very
\nwell-defined processes on loading
\ncabinets with weight. Retesting with
\nexact equipment is needed to ensure
\nthat the final solution offers the same
\nS\/V or seismic protection as desired.
\nThe test may not be needed if the
\nequipment is below the threshold of
\nthe official test.
\nShock and Vibration<\/strong>
\nThis test is a go-to test for equipment
\nthat will be used in mobile
\napplications and simulates a typical
\nenvironment in a train car, vehicle or
\nnext to vibration-generating
\nequipment such as a punch press or
\nother piece of industrial equipment.
\nMinimization of weight and S\/Voptimized
\ndesigns offer long-term
\nbenefits to users, especially in
\ntransportation applications.
\nSeismic<\/strong>
\nSeismic activity is a
\nvery complicated,
\nbut well-studied
\nphenomenon.
\nTesting equipment
\nand processes are
\nwell-defined and
\nwell-known with
\nmultiple labs
\ncapable of doing
\ntests. The test\"\"
\nconsists of placing a
\nfully loaded,
\nstandard cabinet on
\na platform that can
\nmove in any
\ndirection and
\nsimulate the earth\u2019s movements
\nduring a seismic event. Certain
\ndeformation and movement of the
\ncabinet can lead to test failure.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>

SIX \u2013 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)<\/strong>
\nElectromagnetic interference (EMI) has
\nbeen a growing concern with equipment
\nmanufacturers. As equipment becomes
\nfaster and proliferates into all types of
\nmanufacturing and production
\nenvironments the issue of EMI has
\nbecome more prevalent. Environments
\nthat were once considered EMI-free are
\nbecoming more and more susceptible to
\ninterference due to an increase in
\nautomation equipment and electronics
\nemissions. Visual inspection alone of
\ncabinet gaskets does not suffice to
\nensure adequate EMI protection.
\nProper tests and results are needed to
\nensure that a cabinet design meets
\nthose requirements. Gasket integration
\nto provide a Faraday effect is not a
\nsimple matter \u2013 competing with
\nrequirements such as cabinet cooling
\nand perforations for air flow. The latter
\ndemands an understanding of the entire
\nsystem, not just individual components,
\nand necessitates a number of
\naccessories that may seem redundant
\nbut solve very specific problems.

\nIEC 60529 provides guidance for
\nclassifying the ingress protection rating
\n(IP Codes) of enclosures. IP deals with
\ndust and water protection. Equipment
\nthat has better protection against dust\/
\nobjects and water will have higher
\nratings. IP ratings have two numbers –
\none shows dust\/object protection and
\nthe other shows water protection.
\nThere are some industries where the
\nrequirement might be higher than in
\nothers – transportation, military and
\nfood and beverage industries are just a
\nfew that might have high requirements
\nfor IP rating due to the nature of the
\nintended applications as compared to
